Surface science at cryogenic temperatures is available in the dedicated MULTIPROBE LT. A combination of LN2 and LHe cooling enables STM operation at temperatures down to 5 K including 3-dimensional tip coarse positioning as well as tip and sample exchange. If the MULTIPROBE LT is equipped with a separate analysis chamber, full range surface analysis at low temperatures becomes possible using a LHe cooled sample manipulator and the cold-sample transfer facilities.
The first commercial Low Temperature UHV STM with proven atomic resolution performance on metals at 5 K in UHV was produced by Omicron. A wide range of low temperature phenomena such as superconductivity, quantum effects, charge quantum effects, charge , as well as atom manipulation, optical and STM spectroscopy can now be studied on an atomic scale with the LT STM.
