Element-selective domain imaging reveals magnetic coupling in a Ni/Co/Cu(100) epitaxial film system. The strong contrast (top) is due to an in-plane magnetization and indicates a strong ferromagnetic coupling between Ni and the underlying Co which forces the magnetization of the Ni into the film plane (weak contrast due to perpendicular magnetization can also be seen).
